They aren't owed any notice before getting cut or traded. It's a big decision, it's what they've been doing their whole lives. Especially Sproles, who's been injured more times than we can count. If late round picks are affected by this, they probably weren't that valuable to begin with. Obviously no early pick is going to specifically replace either.

The players don't owe the owners anything...especially in the NFL. I totally understand why he's not sure. What else is there for him to accomplish? He's won multiple SBs, won the Walter Peyton award, has an incredible reputation as a player who puts his money where his mouth is with social issues and much more.
I have no animosity towards him or Sproles. It's a big decision...especially when you're getting up in age like these two.
I regard Sproles as a nice bonus if he decides to return.
Possibly Long is waiting for the draft. If we don't take a DE early he may decide to keep playing as there will be plenty game time. Conversely, taking a DE early would mean he's behind Graham, Barnett and the rookie and competing with Curry for regular playing time.
Maybe he's agreed that with the Eagles and the lack of announcement is to keep our options open in the draft.
Mature, sensible signature required for responsible position. Good prospects for the right candidate. Apply within.
But on this one, I just think it is reasonable for the Eagles to make them an offer and to give them 3 months after the season to sign it.
Who knows, maybe the Eagles prefer the flexibility of drafting a kid and these two are the team's fall back option.
But why do you not think Long/Sproles earned the right to wait and see? They've done so much as players and, as has been pointed out, why would Long want to come back to play behind a bunch of players and have to scrap to get playing time? He isn't a young and hungry player who hasn't accomplished anything in his career yet. Neither is Sproles although I'm sure he'd like to get another crack and actually playing in a SB but has been injured. So I'm sure he's deciding whether he wants to go through the grind again knowing he's been a bit injury-prone these past 2 seasons.
I think it's perfectly-reasonable. Why make a decision until you know the whole picture?
